Nicholson Avenue to receive SAMI treatment

This project will resurface approximately five miles of County maintained roads. Traffic control will be provided, and delays are anticipated to be less than 10 minutes. The Department will notify emergency response services and will use construction area signs to notify the traveling public. This project will include conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) paving, as well as a three-phase Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) process to resurface the roadway. The SAMI process includes paving a leveling course to fill in ruts and small holes in the road, applying a SAMI to bridge cracks in the existing pavement, and placing a new asphalt concrete overlay. The SAMI is a combination of highly polymerized asphalt emulsion and crushed quality aggregate. SAMI waterproofs the sub base, helps reduce reflective cracking, and extends the life of the subsequent overlay.

Typical SAMI Overlay process – Tunnel Road resurfacing in July 2015
Hollister Ave finished product – Complete in June 2015

This countywide pavement process will be conducted in two projects: the North County SAMI Overlay and the South County SAMI Overlay. The project streets are shown here:
